"You kissed me."

He gave her a smile that made her stomach twist into knots.

"So I did." Ren leaned away from her and back into the driver's seat. The light from the restaurant illuminated the burgeoning flush of her cheeks. She tried to return his smile, but her face was frozen in place.

"Yes, Mogami-san?" His eyes met hers, and she gaped.

"You kissed me."

She wasn't blinking. Ren started to frown. He had run through a thousand possible outcomes last night, when he had finally decided to make his feelings known... Kyoko going catatonic had not been one of them. He placed a hand on her shoulder and she jumped at his touch.

"Yes, I kissed you."

"But... but..." Kyoko faltered. Her hearbeats were echoing in her ears. "This is... just some kind of test, or exercise, or..."

"No," he interjected. He pulled his hand away from her and she found herself a little sad at its loss. "No, unfortunately not. I have to admit that this is out of my own selfishness and not for any higher purpose, Mogami-san."

Even in the midst of her own reeling emotions, she completely understood the implication of his words. Her blush deepened and she found herself staring at her own shaking hands, still folded on her lap. "Tsuruga-san... I... how long have you..." She stalled, still unable to comprehend.

"Felt this way about you?" he said after a few moments of silence. When she looked up at him again, she saw a hint of color on his cheeks. "For a while, probably... it was so gradual... and one day, I just 'knew', you know what I mean?"

Flashes of her life with Shoutarou popped into her head without warning, and she remembered. The quickening heartbeats, the rush of adrenaline, the feeling of sureness--and her hands flew to her mouth.

She was in love with him, too. How had she been so obtuse to the signs?

She had locked away her memories of love, mainly because they had all involved Shoutarou. When she felt affection for Ren, she told herself it was her pride in her sempai, gratefulness toward her sempai for his help, willingness to help her sempai because he had been so kind to her...

The excuses sounded hollow now. The scrupulous defenses she had built around her heart had acted as blinders instead of shields. The realization of her feelings, as well as her ability to love again, had her dancing on air.

Yet on the other hand, she was still scared. Her instinct told her that he was trustworthy, but her instinct had led her astray before. She knew Shoutarou and Ren were nothing alike--the idea was laughable. But every bad romance was once blissful, wasn't it?

"Mogami-san." His soft voice cut through her thoughts, and she snapped back to the reality of the worried look in his eyes. "I'm sorry if I've upset you... I know that I was being extremely selfish..." Ren was always thinking of her before himself. Now that the curtain had been drawn away from her heart, she wondered that she had not recognized his or even her own feelings sooner. She'd have to thank him for that... for so many things. There were too many things to say, and she had no idea where to start.

Ren was cursing his insensitivity to her feelings when she took a shaking hand and slowly placed it on his own, looking away in embarrassment. His eyes widened.

"I," she faltered, fidgeting in the passenger's seat. "I... about 'knowing,' I..."

I'm an idiot. What could I possibly be scared of? she thought, frustrated. Scared of him, of what they could possibly have together? It seemed like such a joke, when they were looking at each other like lovesick schoolchildren.

Maybe the exhilaration of new romance was born out of the fear of its destination?

Maybe her fear was a knee-jerk reaction to the surge of happiness she couldn't contain?

Either way, Kyoko was sick of speculation. Words speak louder than actions, after all.

Her hand clenched his, and before he could get a word in edgewise (or she could talk herself out of doing it) she leaned over and kissed him back. Her eyes met his, a fleeting gaze before she closed them, and his heart nearly stopped.

So this is what a kiss should feel like. Ren felt like running triumphant laps around Tokyo.

He settled for pulling her closer instead, and delighting in her return embrace.

A minute later, she pulled away from him... and laughed. He was dazed, then bewildered.

"Mogami-san, what...?"

"I kissed you," she replied with a roguish grin on her face. "Tsuruga-san."

He stared at her with a blank expression on his face for a few moments before breaking out into relieved laughter as well.

"So you did."
